 Urban Literacy Society

Chris Woebken

ULS is a collective of urban observationists who are driven by a wide range of research questions investigating human behavioural patterns within the urban fabric, extracting detailed pleasures that are unique to city life and are the sources for non-linear urban story telling. The ULS will employ situationist strategies and urban observation studies, with a particular focus on local individuals and their site-specific observations and stories. We will translate those stories into urban literacy devices to make visible the beauty of a particular spot or routine. The goal is to shift our perception and to understand human behaviour and motivations of activities within the urban infrastructure. We will appropriate existing materials representing the neighbourhood and prototype objects that will be field-tested and documented. We will inaugurate our Manhattan Protocol to explore various strategies and methods for learning, understanding, and communicating in and moving through the city.
