6 Remembering NYC's Wetlands: a guided tour with Ghost Frog
Wetlands are critical in combating climate change; they store more carbon than any other habitat. Yet, we continue to bury these vibrant ecosystems to serve the flight of capital. All three airports in NYC, for example, are built on filled in coastal marshland. Also, Tompkins Square at one time consisted of bogs, ponds, and streams. But what if our future lay, not in avoiding the rising waters of climate change through massive expenditures both economic and emotional? What if we take some notes on how we might live from our amphibian cousins? In "Remembering NYC's Wetlands" Ghost Frog takes people on a tour of Tompkins Square, guiding them through this buried wetland habitat while asking them to re-imagine their relationships to these places and the nonhumans that call them home. Given the startling decline of amphibian populations around the world Ghost Frog asks, "how might we include amphibians in a changing urban landscape?” Hop along to find out.
