The Relay 07: Brooklyn
The Relay, similar to a kind of musical relay race, consists of thirteen improvising musicians, separated into three trios, each trio in a different venue. The Relay is set in motion when each of the four remaining musicians (the opening relayers) arbitrarily shows up to a venue and relieves a musician. That musician, in turn, then meanders to another venue to relieve another musician, and so on until the Relay ends. The audience may stay and experience the transformations of a single space with each new musician (relayer), or follow their favorite musician around to other venues, stopping along the way, intermingling with other musicians they might see walking to another space. There are no other rules. There is no set music decided. Within each venue musicians are listening, cooperating, and creating in real time. Since 1992, this event has been relaying itself all over the world: London, Germany, Athens, Madrid, Beruit, Paris and in New York which was held in 2005 at MoMA. The Relay is a testament to the celebration of music, community, space, spontaneity, sound, art, improvisation, collaboration, and much, much more.
