A portable shelter for pedestrians to use while crossing the street.

The Portable Pedestrian Tunnel, or PPT is intended as a form of extremely temporary shelter. The PPT is a flexible tube, constructed out of 25-foot blue poly weave tarp. The PPT is much like a human scale slinky, or more accurately, a expanding plastic duct tube. However, the PPT is primarily acts as a temporary traffic barrier for pedestrians crossing the street. The participating pedestrians will wait at a traffic light. When the light turns green, one of the pedestrians will bring one end of the PPT over to other side of the cross walk. As the pedestrian crosses the bringing one end of the flexible tube with them, the PPT unfolds and blocks any opposing traffic from creeping through the intersection while the light is red. As the PPT is expanded it provides an open tube for the rest of the group of pedestrians to pass through protected. Finally, the last pedestrian picks up the back end of the PPT and brings it with them across the street and completes the process.
The PPT project will be utilized on a specific route. In this sense it could be seen as an effort to establish, even for a moment, a physical manifestation of a habitual common path. It would begin at the Lorimer stop on the L train in Brooklyn and then finish up at the HQ gallery at 236 Grand St. At HQ gallery the pedestrian parade will break up and reflect on the bright future awaiting the common pedestrian in a flexible architectural world.
