Collapsing the history of a place, photographs of locations that have dramatically shifted in recent history, through demolition or construction, are printed as posters and installed on existing scaffolding at the same location.

“Layers of location” is a series of interventions within the urban environment, a reflection on the history of place. Working from a personal archive of photographs documenting change in the city, images of locations that have dramatically shifted in recent history, through demolition or construction, are printed as posters. June through September 2007, using tactics of guerilla advertising, these posters are installed on existing scaffolding at the same site where the photograph was taken, providing a glimpse of a past life of the location. The interventions are focused in the neighborhoods of Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and Long Island City.
The nature of scaffolding posters is temporary, they may be torn down or covered over at any point or simply overlooked. Several posters are installed in the surrounding area of the Conflux festival with the hope they will remain visible for the 4 days. Photo documentation of all of the interventions from June through September 2007 is on display in a gallery space as part of Conflux.
