Frauke Behrendt & Atau Tanaka
Frauke Behrendt is organising the Mobile Music Workshop series (http://www.mobilemusicworkshop.org/) with Atau Tanaka and Lalya Gaye. Frauke is a researcher at the University of Sussex (UK) and is interested in the role of sound in the areas of interactive art, locative media and mobile technology. Her focus is on the increasing number of artist experimenting with mobile phones as means of audience participation in their sound/music-focussed projects. She is also member of the EU-funded research network on "Sonic Interaction Design" (SID), chairing the working group "Interactive Art and Music" (http://www.cost-sid.org/).

Atau Tanaka is one of the founders of the Mobile Music Workshop, and alongside Lalya Gaye and Frauke Behrendt work with the host city each year. He is an artist and researcher, creating performance instruments, responsive installations, and participative locative works where sound becomes a malleable medium. He has been researcher at Sony CSL Paris, artistic co-director at STEIM, and is currently Chair at Newcastle's Culture Lab in the U.K.

The Mobile Music Workshops are a series of annual gatherings on the creative uses of mobile music technologies.
The Mobile Music Workshops are a series of annual gatherings on the creative uses of mobile music technologies. This series of annual workshops began to explore and establish the emerging field of mobile music technology in 2004 in a workshop held at the Viktoria Institute in Gothenberg Sweden. The second workshop was organised in May 2005 during the NIME05 conference in Vancouver, Canada and included hands-on brainstorming activities. The third edition of the workshop was a two-day event, taking place in March 2006 at the University of Sussex, Brighton, UK. It focused on the locative media aspect of mobile music. This year’s workshop was hosted by STEIM and Waag Society in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, two arts centers known for interactive music and locative media respecitvely. The 2008 workshop will take place at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. This presentation introduces the NY and U.S. audience to developments in the European scene in mobile and locative music. It serves also to raise interest for a possible North American edition of the workshop in the future.
We will show documentation of various projects presented during the MMW’s, including Sonic City, as well as work from Conflux artists like Mark Shepard, and will preview of work to be shown in Vienna, Net_Derive.
Conflux is the annual NYC festival for contemporary psychogeography where international artists, technologists, urban adventurers and the public put investigations of everyday city life into practice on the streets.
